Portland Monthly’s All-Local Food Festival Will Be the Toast (and Taste) of Summer

Cowabunga—our ode to Oregon bounty—features Bar Casa Vale, Ringside, Little Beast, Carman Ranch, Tournant, and more. Plus, our seventh annual Country Brunch!

Country Brunch returns as part of Cowabunga, Portland Monthly's lavish all-local food fest. All the bloodies are invited.

At Portland Monthly, we know we're #blessed to cover one of the nation’s greatest food scenes: a locavore candyland where chefs, farmers, ranchers, artisans, and purveyors unite to forge a true regional food culture. Yet while we’ve often mustered gatherings of food-scene favorites, we’ve never done anything quite like this: Cowabunga, our new three-day festival of Oregon’s tastiest and greatest, will take over Portland’s Rossi Farm July 13–15. Our sharpest culinary creators will rally together. Local heroes will vie with rising stars. And when all is said and done, our food scene’s most dedicated fans (you, probably, if you're reading this) will be the winners.

The weekend will begin with Friday's Seared, a VIP dinner channeling Portland’s meatiest fixations via indie butcher Zeph Sheppard on the grill and Tournant’s mobile oyster bar. On Saturday, kitchen ninjas (or, you know, earnestly aspiring home cooks) will head to Rossi’s family owned gem of urban agricultural land for Farm Out, an afternoon of delicious, themed demos conducted by some of Oregon’s smartest chefs and food- ulture innovators. Later on Saturday night, Cowabunga helps Rossi and its Parkrose neighbors revive a treasured neighborhood night out, in the form of Barn Bash—a come-one, come-all barbecue to mark the height of summer. Smokehouse Tavern, Yakuza, Taqueria Nueve, and Burgerville are signed on to deal some heat. Beer, you ask? Pono, Breakside, Gateway, and Little Beast (so far) shall provide.

The finale is a perennial favorite: Country Brunch, Portland Monthly’s long-running all-star tribute to the city’s key weekend pastime. As always, some of our best morning masters will serve iconic bites, while the Bloody Mary Smackdown unfolds in all its gory, invigorating glory. Brunch destinations like Besaw's, La Moule, and new Simpatica project La Luna Cafe join cult favorites like shell smashers Fried Egg I’m in Love. The "cup de grace," of course, is our annual bloody mary smackdown, this year featuring rising newcomers like Palomar and Hey Love alongside Renata and Red Star.
